![]() ![]() The supernatural aspects don’t come to the fore until about 2/5ths of the way into the book, but the set-up preceding this is fast-paced. ![]() The most notable aspect of Michelle Paver’s Dark Matter: A Ghost Story is its emphasis on the psychological impacts of darkness and isolation, and the build-up of tension through Jack’s narration if his own fears and uncertainties. Despite Jack’s different social status from his companions, and the strange reluctance of their Norwegian captain to transport them to their desired destination of Gruhuken, the expedition seems to be going well, and Jack soon warms to expedition leader Gus but after a series of accidents leaves Jack alone on the island, he starts to feel haunted by a malevolent presence, that hints at Gruhuken’s dark past, and stories which the Norwegians he has encountered do not dare to tell… ![]() It’s 1937 and Jack Miller, desperate to escape the monotony of his life in London, agrees to join four strangers – Algie, Hugo, Teddy and Gus – on a scientific expedition to the Arctic Circle. ![]()
